They didn't realise that they couldn't actually land on the moon in their spaceship and travel through the firmament that goes over the Earth, as the Earth is a closed system. This has led to their spaceship hitting the firmament and then crash landing into the sea, resulting in them being rescued by a robotic AI crab.
